100 DAY WRITING

Well, just one more day until the weekend, and it can't come too soon! Although I will be toiling away on report cards, it will still be nice to sleep in!

With the excitement of our 100 Day Celebration subsiding, I usually like to have my firsties do some reflective writing about some of their favourite activities. I plan to add the writing piece to our Grade One Memory Book (see related post by clicking on the link). You are more than welcome to help yourself to the FREEBIE. 100 DAYS OF FUN!

I came back to work on Tuesday after a 5 day hiatus (workshop, personal day, weekend, and provincial holiday), and jumped right back into the swing of things with our 100 Day Celebration! We had so much FUN! In addition to trying to reach 100 Acts of Bucket Filling, the highlight of the day was making Fruit Loop cereal necklaces with our grade level friends. They enjoyed the sugar high from their Fruit Loop necklaces...Most of the sugary O's had been sucked and chewed off their necklace string by the middle of the afternoon (all I have to say is G-R-O-S-S. Is there anything more gross than a sucked on piece of string?). We participated in a variety of 100-themed activities and worked so hard, all while having so much fun! Although I can't share the photos of our 100 Day Celebration, I would love to share a couple of the activities my cuties completed. Help yourself to the FREEBIES!

A CIRCLE IS NOT A VALENTINE

In addition to all the treats and fun we had celebrating Valentine's Day, one of the math related topics I introduced to my firsties last week was 2 dimensional shapes. Using the shapes related book, A Circle Is Not A Valentine, by H. Werner Zimmermann, was a great way to introduce and talk about the shapes all around us, especially around Heart Day.

 

In addition to reading the book, we also have used assorted polygon posters to help us distinguish between simple 2 dimensional shapes. The songs are short and very catchy, perfect for my little first grade cuties! While the songs themselves can be widely found on the internet, I apologize for not being able to give kudos to the generous creator of the shapes posters. Please let me know if you know the author of the posters, so I can give proper credit!

To accompany the book and shapes posters, I also had my students participate in a Classroom Shapes Scavenger Hunt. They loved walking around the room with their clipboards, in search of shapes! I had my firsties draw and label pictures in the spaces provided to incorporate a bit of writing into the activity.
